Just when you thought winter was over in Canberra, it came back with an icy vengeance. The Bureau of Meteorology announced that “a strong cold front” that will move through Canberra this weekend, with the potential for snow in the Capital!
Parts of the ACT, like the Brindabellas, already saw snow on Thursday. This makes us very hopeful for possible snow flurries in Canberra by Friday evening.
Seeing Canberra sprinkled with snow makes us excited, it also makes us shiver. The cold winds already have us reaching for our hot water bottles.
So, here is how we stay warm in Canberra’s particularly cold times.
- Layers! Layers! Layers!
Layering up will help you save your body heat, and prepare you from any unexpected temperatures changes. By wearing thermals under your pants, you can shield from brisk Canberra mornings and evenings when you travel to and from work. Maybe keep a pair of gloves in your protect your fingers, also a beanie is a great way to warm up your head and ears. Use a scarf to cover your nose, this is especially helpful during those big gusts of wind. Turtlenecks came back in fashion just in the nick of time, as they add a great layer of protection from those bitter winds. Keeping dry is also vital, so top off your winter outfit with a rain jacket or water-resistant outer-layer.
- Warming Drinks, Soups and Hearty Foods
This weekend, maybe skip the ice cream at Messina, instead go for a hot chocolate at your local cafe. Having a hot drink can warm you up, even just holding one in your hands can help you battle these cold Canberra winds. If you’re feeling ‘cabin fever-ish’, going out for a meal is a great way of getting out in this Canberra winter, while also keeping you nice and warm. But the best way to stay cosy is to spend the day cooking and baking. Having the oven on will help heat the house and yourself.
- Stay Active!
Although you may just want to huddle under a blanket on these grey Canberra days, moving around is the best way to keep yourself warm. So maybe for a wander around the office or a walk during your break to boost circulation. Going to the gym is also a great warm to warm up, but allow extra time to your warm-up and down.
- Move your date night from blustery bar to the cinema!
Popcorn, heating and comfy chairs? Yes, please. Going to the movies is another great way to get out and about while also escaping the cold. Canberra has so many cinema options, both in the city and in outer suburbs. But if you want to stay at home, why not have a movie night at home? and stay warm with friends and loved ones. See a romantic drama to warm your heart, or a comedy to work out your funny bone.
